Equine Reiki

Animal brown horse

Reiki offers valuable support to all equines — from elite competition horses to cherished companion ponies. Known for its calming and grounding effects, Reiki can benefit horses in a variety of ways.

While scientific research on Reiki’s effects in animals is still limited, many horse owners and practitioners have observed significant improvements in areas such as:

  • Tendon and ligament injuries

  • Sweet itch

  • Laminitis

  • Loading and travel anxiety

  • Colic

  • Spooking or nervous behavior

  • Emotional healing from past trauma or mistreatment

  • Settling into a new yard or environment

Horses tend to respond remarkably well to Reiki’s gentle energy.

This non-invasive, hands-off therapy involves no pressure or physical manipulation. Instead, it works holistically — supporting healing on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Reiki aims to address the root cause of imbalances rather than just managing symptoms.

Reiki is safe for all equines and can be used alongside conventional veterinary treatment to promote overall well-being.

What can Reiki do for my horse?

Reiki can support your horse in a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioural areas — whether they’re in active work, recovering, or simply in need of balance and calm. Below are some of the ways Reiki has been known to help:

Physical Support

  • Laminitis

  • Sweet itch

  • Tendon and ligament injuries

  • General stiffness or discomfort

  • Pre- and post-competition care

  • Loss of appetite

  • Post-operative recovery

Emotional Wellbeing

  • Nervous or timid horses

  • Past trauma or mistreatment

  • Settling into a new yard or environment

  • Bereavement and emotional loss

  • Stress from competition (for both horse and rider)

Behavioural Issues

  • Stereotypical behaviours (e.g. weaving, cribbing)

  • Spooking or nervous reactions

  • Box walking

  • Loading difficulties

  • Separation anxiety

Groundwork and Performance

  • Challenges with focus or cooperation during training

  • Performance-related stress or resistance

Strengthening the Bond

  • Deepen the connection and trust between horse and owner

Even healthy horses can benefit greatly from Reiki. A session offers them a deeply relaxing experience that supports overall wellbeing, balance, and happiness.

What happens during a treatment?

There are three treatment options: while the horse is tied, free in the field/stable, or sometimes even over the stable door. The horse chooses which feels best. During the session, I gently move around the horse’s body, with my hands either resting lightly or hovering just above.

Most horses enter deep relaxation, though some may appear fidgety when releasing tension, pain, or trauma. Sessions typically last 1 to 1½ hours—with initial treatments possibly being shorter as the horse adjusts to the healing energy.

After the session, it’s best to leave your horse undisturbed for a couple of hours to absorb the energy. You might notice signs like increased water intake or natural elimination, which are all normal responses as the body rebalances.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of Reiki sessions your horse may need depends on their individual situation. Some horses show noticeable improvements after just one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments—especially if they’re dealing with deeper physical issues, emotional trauma, or long-term behavioural patterns.

For chronic conditions or past trauma, a course of 3–4 sessions close together is often recommended to allow the energy to work at a deeper level. After that, occasional maintenance sessions can help support ongoing balance and wellbeing.

As always, your horse will guide the process — Reiki works best when we listen to what they need.

Where does Equine Reiki take place?

All Equine Reiki takes place where your horse lives either at your stables, yard or home. Please note there may be a travel charge for anything further than a 20 mile radius from Wadebridge, charged at 50p/mile (after the first 20 miles). This will be confirmed with you at time of booking - thank you.

**IMPORTANT**

Veterinary permission isn’t required for Reiki. However, I would always recommend that any horse with a known or suspected health issue or behavioural concern, should be assessed and diagnose by a Vet. Reiki complements veterinary care—it’s not an alternative.
